"The best American sailors come from Iowa. This conviction was arrived at long ago and still appears to be on a sound
foundation. Iowa is an agricultural state and there is nothing like a farm to make a person long for the sea.
This is especially true if the routine includes scraping out henhouses and slopping the hogs. In the case of Iowa, it
is bordered on both sides by the Missouri and the Mississippi Rivers and this has given many young farmers a taste of life
afloat. Whether fresh or salt there is a fascination in buoyancy and besides, we all know to where the river flows,
or at least the principle ones."
